It's one of the most common questions we get — and one of the most misunderstood. Do you need a liquor license to hire STARBAR NY for your Long Island event?
The short answer: it depends on your event type and venue. Here's what you need to know.
How New York State Liquor Law Works for Private Events
New York State's liquor licensing is governed by the State Liquor Authority (SLA). The license requirement turns on whether you are selling alcohol or serving it.
- If alcohol is free to guests — as part of a private event with a fixed guest list — no liquor license is typically required for the host. This covers most weddings, private birthday parties, and corporate events where guests are not paying for individual drinks.
- If guests pay per drink — or if the event is open to the general public — a license is required by whoever is collecting payment for the alcohol.
In practice, the vast majority of events we serve at STARBAR NY — weddings, private parties, corporate holiday events — fall into the first category. The host pays for open bar service; guests drink for free.
What About the Venue?
If your event is at a licensed venue (a catering hall, restaurant, or any establishment with an on-premises license), the venue's license typically covers alcohol service at events held there. In this case, the venue may require that all alcohol is purchased through them — or they may allow outside caterers including mobile bar services under their license.
Always confirm with your venue what their policy is on outside bar service. Some venues on Long Island readily welcome mobile bars; others require you to use their in-house service. We're happy to coordinate directly with venues we've worked with before.
Backyard and Private Property Events
For events at a private residence — the most common scenario for mobile bar rental on Long Island — no license is required as long as alcohol is not sold and the event is private (not open to the public). Your backyard wedding or graduation party is exactly the kind of event we're set up for.
Corporate Events and Brand Activations
Corporate events where alcohol is provided as a free perk for employees or guests generally fall within the private event rules. Brand activations that involve public interaction with alcohol service are a more nuanced situation — we'll walk you through the specifics during your consultation.
Our Role
STARBAR NY's bartenders are licensed, insured, and trained in responsible alcohol service (TIPS certified). We maintain our own insurance coverage for every event. What we don't do is obtain a liquor license on your behalf — that's specific to your event context and venue situation.
During your booking consultation, we'll ask about your event type and venue so we can flag anything that might require additional steps. For most Long Island private events, there's nothing extra you need to do.
Have questions about your specific situation? Contact us — we're happy to talk it through before you book.
